Radio - Straight Edge
This is a transcript from a radio interview at a local stamp exhibition.
Announcer A Welcome to another interview of a stamp collector from the Philatelic EXPO here in Philadelphia. Let's find a collector to interview.
A Sir, you seem intent on studying your event program. But do you have a few minutes to describe your collecting interests to the listening audience?
Collector C Sure.
A So are you a stamp collector?
C Yes I am. In fact I am a specialist in a couple areas of collecting.
A And what would they be?
C I collect straight edge stamps and stamps with no gum.
A Straight edge stamps meaning stamps where one side has no perforations.
C Exactly.
A What got you started with that area of specialty?
C I found that they were less expensive than stamps with perfs on all four sides.
A So you must really like coil stamps and booklet stamps, then too?
C Yep. But genuine imperfs are off my list of collecting. They are just too expensive.
A So what do you do if you can not find straight edge stamps?
C Well I simply make straight edge stamps.
A You mean you cut off the perfs on one side.
C Exactly. I can even make coil stamps in this way. I take a scissors to stamps that do not fit into my collection and I make them fit.
A That seems drastic. Isn't that defeating standard collecting methods?
C Not really. In fact I have even thought of making imperforate stamps with my scissors. I just don't like being bothered with perf 10 11 12 13 14 etc.
A You said you also collect stamps with no gum. Does that mean you collect only used?
C Oh no. I will find a mint stamp with gum and then wash off the gum to have a mint no gum stamp for my collection.
A You certainly are a specialist. Thanks for talking with us.
C Do you want to hear about my bisect covers collection?
A You mean where you cut off half of a stamp on a cover to make it a bisect?
C Yes. I have hundreds of them.
A Thanks. But no thanks. Back to the studio.
