Radio Interview - Jeopardy

Announcer - A We are interviewing participants at this regional stamp expo in Philadelphia for our radio audience. Here's a participant. Sir, sir, do you have a moment to be interviewed for the listening radio audience?

    Collector C - Sure.

A  You're hear at the regional stamp expo to find stamps for your collection?

    C Yes I am.

A Do you mind if I ask your budget for this event? Do you set aside a certain amount to spend?

C No I do not mind. I do not bring cash for obvious reasons. But all the dealers know me. I have $42,000 available to spend at this event.

A $42,000?

    C Yes

A So where how when. Wow. Do you expect to spend it all here today?

C That would be great, but that is unlikely.

A Well what are you looking for?

C Rarities, for sure. I do not have many holes in my collection of US stamps. I also collect worldwide.

A Rarities, like what?

C Well I like inverted centers and other printing errors. Color omissions, color shifts. Inverted overprints. Like that.

A You mean like C3A

C Yes. But I have that item.

A Do you expect to find anything today

    C As I said, I hope so.

A Do you go to shows regularly?

C Every few months I find a show to attend. A few dealers hold items aside for me to look at. I also check out online auctions.

A And do you mind my asking where you ever got $42,000 to spend on your hobby?

C I was a contestant on Jeopardy, the TV show.

A So you won $42,000 on Jeopardy?

C Oh no. I won much more. After taxes I got slightly over $200,000. I was a repeat winner over several shows. Perhaps you saw me?

A No. Not really. So you had a quick finger on the buzzer and had answers Alex liked?

    C. Yep. Because I am an avid stamp collector, and have been since childhood, I have a good knowledge of history, geography, and science.

A So what advice would you offer to your fellow collectors if they ever happen to be selected for Jeopardy?

C Sure. Collect avidly. Study to know the history behind all the stamps collected. Just filling a space isn't enough. Use Google.

A So what stamps would you advise collectors to seek?

C Any that are for fun. Ignore the catalogue values. Just buy what you like.

A Then go on Jeopardy and win a ton of money.

    C Really.

A Back to the station.
