Radio Interview

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is Tom Foolery, your Public Broadcasting Corporation radio announcer coming to you from the American Philatelists Society show and sale in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In an attempt to give you the flavor of this event, I will ask a participant to share his stamp collecting story with you.

Here's and interesting looking participant. Sir, excuse me sir, would you be willing to speak to the radio audience about your stamp collecting interests?

    Sure

Your name, sir?

    Herman Steinmiller

And you are from?

    San Diego, California

That's quite a distance to travel to attend this show and sale in Philadelphia. I suppose you save up all year to attend.

Yes. I've been an APS member since 1958. That's 45 years. I have attended every APS major show in the US since 1958.

So in a few years, you will be eligible for your 50 year APS pin?

    Yes.

Well what area of philately interests you.

I collect Germany, German Colonies, German Offices Abroad, German Occupation, German States to include Bavaria, Bergdorf, Bremen, Brunswick, Hamburg, Hanover, Lubbock, Mecklenburg Schwerin, Mecklenburg Strelitz, Oldenburg, Prussia, Saxony, Schleswig Holstein, Turn and Taxis, Württemberg and the Northern German Confederation.

Wow. That's impressive. I see you brought your Schaubek Specialized album on a rolling cart to this event. I suppose that helps you know what stamps you are missing.

    Yes.

And so you'll probably be looking for quite rare and expensive items. I mean, since you have been collecting for 45 years, you probably have most issues.

I do hope to find stamps for my collection. I have 1000 dollars to spend.

Are you looking for specific items?

No. Just what I need for my collection.

Can I have a look at your album?

    Sure.

This is a beautiful album. It looks to have hand tooled leather and acid free pages with hingeless mounts, all in an impressive slip case.

Only the best for my collection.

As I page through your album I don't see any stamps.

Look at page 262. It's the only stamp I have, so far.

Oh yes, I see a stamp there now.

    It's my favorite.

But the stamp is mounted face down, exposing only the gum side.

Yes. That's how I prefer to look at my collection. As a Germany collector, I value the gum side much more heavily than the picture side.

Is that a hinge mark?

    Where.

Just kidding.

So you've been collecting for 45 years and have only one stamp in your collection?

That's correct. As a Germany collector, I value quality over quantity.

Well enjoy the show.

    Thanks.

Now back to the studio.
